In 1978 he was the first Asian who was honoured with Associateship of The Royal Photographic Society for Visual Journalism, followed by a Fellowship. Aloke Mitras photographs in the book titled Bonedi Kolkatar Gharbari (The Historic Houses of Kolkata) has been appreciated widely by the public as well as by the critics.
