The availability, access, and consumption of nutritious food is extremely important. Despite declining arable agricultural land, Bangladesh has made substantial progress in boosting domestic food production, improving access to food by increasing household income, and enhancing nutritional outcomes. Nevertheless, the challenges to food and nutrition security remain formidable. Future agricultural growth and food and nutrition security are threatened by population growth, worsening soil fertility, diminishing access to land and other scarce natural resources, increasing vulnerability of crop varieties to pests and diseases, and persistent poverty leading to poor access to food. In addition, the impacts of climate change—an increase in the incidence of natural disasters, sea intrusion, and salinity—will exacerbate food and nutrition insecurity in the coming decades if corrective measures are not taken. In this context, this book presents an array of research that collectively focus on securing food for all in Bangladesh. Specifically, this book has 15 chapters that address four broad issues: (1) agricultural technology adoption; (2) input use and agricultural productivity; (3) food security and output market; and (4) poverty, food security, and women’s empowerment.

জাতীয় অধ্যাপক ডা. নুরুল ইসলাম (১ এপ্রিল ১৯২৮ - ২৪ জানুয়ারি ২০১৩) হলেন বাংলাদেশের একজন প্রথিতযশা চিকিৎসক যিনি চিকিৎসাশাস্ত্র ও অধ্যাপনা জন্য বিশেষ খ্যাতিমান ছিলেন। তিনি বাংলাদেশ সরকার কর্তৃক দেশের জাতীয় অধ্যাপক নির্বাচিত হয়েছিলেন। তিনি বাংলাদেশের জাতির জনক ও প্রয়াত রাষ্ট্রপতি শেখ মুজিবুর রহমানের ব্যক্তিগত চিকিৎসক হিসাবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেছেন। ১৯৯৭ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে তাকে স্বাধীনতা দিবস পুরস্কার প্রদান করা হয়।

Mustafa K. Mujeri

Mustafa K. Mujeri Graduate from Rajshahi University, obtained Ph.D. in Economics from McMaster University in Canada in 1978. Before joining as the Director General of the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) in 2009, he served as the Chief Economist of the Bangladesh Bank; Advisor of UNDP in Cambodia; Director Research of the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific; Visiting Faculty at the Department of Economics, University of Queensland; National Expert in the Bangladesh Planning Commission; and Associate Professor of Economics, Rajshahi University. He has published extensively in national and international journals.
