হাজার বছরের বাংলা কবিতা : ১ম খণ্ড

বিদেশি, যাদের ভাষা বাংলা নয়, এবং বাঙালি, উভয় শ্রেণির আগ্রহী পাঠককে প্রাচীন কাল থেকে সম্প্রতি লেখা বাংলা কবিতার সঙ্গে পরিচিত করার জন্য এই সংকলন। এখানে রয়েছে বাংলা কবিতার বিবর্তনের এবং নানা বাঁক বদলের ইতিহাস। প্রাচীন যুগের চর্যাপদের কবিদের দিয়ে শুরু করে মধ্যযুগের মঙ্গলকাব্য, বৈষ্ণব কাব্য, বাউল পদাবলি, শাক্ত পদাবলি, ময়মনসিং ও পূর্ববঙ্গ গীতিকার কবিতার দৃষ্টান্ত দেবার পর এই সংকলন শেষ হয়েছে আঠারাে শতকে যে অধ্যায়ের সুচনা, সেই আধুনিক কবিতা দিয়ে। প্রতি অধ্যায়ের কবিতার আগে দেওয়া হয়েছে তার সামাজিক, রাজনৈতিক এবং সাংস্কৃতিক পটভূমির পরিচিতি যা সংকলনটিকে দিয়েছে পূর্ণাঙ্গতা। প্রথমে দেওয়া সাধারণ ভূমিকায় পাঠক পাবেন সংকলনটি গ্রন্থনার পটভূমি, অনুবাদের সংক্ষিপ্ত আলােচনা, কবিতা নির্বাচনের ব্যাখ্যা, বাংলা কবিতা ও গদ্যের ক্রমবিকাশের বর্ণনা এবং এই দুই শাখায় বিষয়ের পার্থক্য নিয়ে সংক্ষিপ্ত আলােচনা। This anthology of Bengali poetry has been 'written' to give a comprehensive introduction to both Bengali and non-Bengali readers through selection of poems and their translations in English. The general introduction with which the anthology begins and the introductions to each chapter give an idea about the political and cultural background of Bengali poetry in different periods. These introductions, accompanied with the original and translated poems, illustrate the evolution of Bengali language and poetry since the tenth century when the early era of Bengali literature began, to the present. The variety and vibrancy of Bengali poetry, as history progressed, have been captured by the poems and their translations. These unmistakably place Bengali poetry as one of the richest in the world, a fact that may not be known by many, including those who speak Bengali. Based on the rich tradition, Bengali poetry is growing from strength to strenth, enriching the world literature. The inherent quality of Bengali poetry was recognised long ago, in 1914, when the Nobel Prize for literature was awarded to Rabindronath Tagore for his mystical poems compiled in Gitanjali.
