সত্যজিৎ রায় এক বাঙালি কিংবদন্তী, যিনি বিংশ শতাব্দীর অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ চলচ্চিত্রকারের খ্যাতি অর্জন করেছিলেন বিশ্বদরবারে। কর্মজীবনে একইসাথে চিত্রনাট্য রচনা, সঙ্গীত স্বরলিপি রচনা, সম্পাদনা, প্রকাশক, চিত্রকর, গ্রাফিক নকশাবিদ, লেখক ও চলচ্চিত্র সমালোচক হিসেবে ভূমিকা রেখেছেন অসম্ভব গুণী এই মানুষটি। ১৯২১ সালে কলকাতার শিল্প-সাহিত্যচর্চায় খ্যাতনামা এক বাঙালি পরিবারে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন তিনি। বাংলাদেশের কিশোরগঞ্জ জেলার কটিয়াদী উপজেলার মসূয়া গ্রামে রয়েছে তাঁর পৈত্রিক ভিটা। ইতালীয় নব্য বাস্তবতাবাদী ছবি ‘লাদ্রি দি বিচিক্লেত্তে’ বা ‘দ্য বাইসাইকেল থিফ’ তাঁকে এতটাই প্রভাবিত করেছিলো যে, সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়ে ফেলেন চলচ্চিত্র নির্মাণের। প্রথম চলচ্চিত্র ‘পথের পাঁচালী’র জন্যই পেয়েছিলেন ১১টি আন্তর্জাতিক স্বীকৃতি, যার মধ্যে অন্যতম হলো কান চলচ্চিত্র উৎসবে পাওয়া ‘শ্রেষ্ঠ মানব দলিল’ পুরস্কার। তবে তাঁর কাজের সমালোচকও কম ছিলো না। এসব সমালোচনার উত্তরে লেখা দুটি প্রবন্ধ পাওয়া যায় সত্যজিৎ রায় এর বই ‘বিষয় চলচ্চিত্র’-তে। কল্পকাহিনী ধারায় সত্যিজিৎ রায় এর বই সমূহ জয় করেছিলো সব বয়সী পাঠকের মন। তাঁর সৃষ্ট তুখোড় চরিত্র ‘ফেলুদা’, ‘ প্রফেসর শঙ্কু’ এবং ‘তাড়িনী খুড়ো’ যেন আজও জীবন্ত। একের পিঠে দুই, আরো বাড়ো এমন মজার সব শিরোনামে বারোটির সংকলনে লিখেছেন অসংখ্য ছোটগল্প। এছাড়াও সত্যজিৎ রায় এর বই সমগ্র’র মধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য হলো চলচ্চিত্র বিষয়ক ‘একেই বলে শ্যুটিং’, আত্মজীবনীমূলক ‘যখন ছোট ছিলাম’ এবং ছড়ার বই ‘তোড়ায় বাঁধা ঘোড়ার ডিম’। ১৯৯২ সালে মৃত্যুর কিছুদিন আগেই তার বর্ণাঢ্য কর্মজীবনের স্বীকৃতিস্বরূপ ‘একাডেমি সম্মানসূচক পুরষ্কার' (অস্কার) প্রাপ্তি তাঁর জীবনের অন্যতম সেরা অর্জন।
