Ishwardas Nagasr's Futuhat-i-Alamgiri is an exceptionally important chronicle of Emperor Aurangzeb's reign which was pretty long, extending over a period of fifty years (1658-1707 AD). It contains keen insights into the mystique surrounding the reign which has been projected as partial, orthodox, obscurantist, communal, sectarian, and even anti-people.... The Futuhat-i-Alamgiri represents the emperor as either a champion of Islam or oppressor of Hinduism. Moreover, neither the conflict with Shivaji nor the events following the detah of Jaswant Singh are put forward in a religious light.... Tasneem Ahmed, b.1948, studied Medeival Indian History at Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh and Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Later he obtained his PhD from Rajasthan University, Jaipur. He contributed a number of research papers in reputed journals. His other publications are Geographical Glimpses of Medeival India (3 Vols.), co-authored Tarikh-i-Akbari an annotated translation with an introduction, and Enclyclopedic Dictionary of Medeival India. He served the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), New Delhi in various capacities for more than 30 years and relinquished service in August 2007.
